Milam Family Pictures

The pictures below, starting in the upper left and going clockwise is Charles at age 3 years, 1 month old, my Uncle Frank born 10 years earlier than my father in 1910 at 1 year old, my sister Debbie taken in the third grade and me again on my 21st birthday. You can double click on the image to enlarge:

This picture was given to me by my cousin David McMahon whose mother Dorothy, my mother's sister and my aunt, apparently kept this picture and it eventually wound up presented back to me by cousin David at his villa in Cyprus on our recent vacation there. The picture was taken at our house at 2334 Naomi Street in Burbank before my sister Debbie was born in 1953. I look about 7 or 8 so this picture was taken some time in 1952. The picture below is a very old picture of my grandfather, Louis Walter and my grandmother, Gertrude, in the possession of Roy Lewis Milam, b Mar 10, 1914 d Apr 4, 1998 upon the death of Roy's parents. The picture was taken in Oakland so I am surmising its age is somewhere around 1906-1910. My grandmother reported she was in San Francisco during the great '06 earthquake when she was 26 years old b Nov 1880, d Nov 1989. What I don't know is how my grandparents migrated back to Missouri:

The picture below was copied from an old metal picture, not a print and most likely
taken in the early 1900's. I do know that my uncle Frank was born in 1910 when my
grandmother was 30 years old. So this tin picture was probably taken on or before 1905:

Family History and collections

The email below was written about 10 years ago when I was doing research on the Milam family and prepared this based on correspondence and information provided to me by two known relatives who were alive at the time and knew my grandfather and his brothers who, along with my father, were born in the state of Missouri. The email was sent to Lonzo Milam who was a principal sponsor of an initial internet web site on the Milam name and who was requesting data to be submitted by anyone interested in advancing the Milam family history:

Re: MO Milam branch

I enjoy receiving the Milam emails and have read and saved every one. I thought I had inherited my "green thumb" from my grandmother but after hearing about the history of the Milam Apple, Peach and Lemon trees, I am not so sure at this point. I am sorry to take so long to get my input on email, but better late than never. I don't have this down on a table or form but I will write it out in letter form.

My father, Charles Douglas Milam, Sr. was born October 3, 1920 in Oak Grove, MO, where I still have relatives: Florence (Milam) Owings and her older brother Roy Milam (married to Mary Kay Milam). My father died Oct 10, 1988 in Burbank, CA where I grew up. He died almost 50 years to the day from his father, Lewis or Louis Walter Milam, Florence and Roy's (their father was Bert b on April 27, 1884 in MO) Uncle "Lou" and my grandfather, who was born on Feb 3, 1871 in Jackson Co. MO. Lewis (according to Roy) and Uncle Lou to Florence, died at the age of 67 in Los Angeles in 1938. He was married to Getrude Dorothy Vernon (b Nov 10, 1880 in Abilene, KS, d Mar 17, 1969 in Burbank). I initially had more info. on the Vernon side. Apparently my father and his father weren't very communicative, so most of the info. I have was researched and later verified by Florence and Mary Kay.

Florence tells me that my great grandfather Milton left VA in 1865 or 1866 and came to MO. Milton was b in Bedford County VA sometime in 1834 and married in the same county to Mary L. Wheat in the 1860's, dafter 1900 in MO. Milton's father was Pettis D. Milam, b 1808 in VA, d 1870 in VA. He married Sally Wilkerson, b in VA but died (early) in 1835. They had two children, Eliza b 1832 in VA and Milton in 1834. There was another male son b in 1836 in VA, I guess to another mother.

Milton and Mary Milam had 12 children (apparently my side of the Milam's were good at farming and carpentry, etc. ): Fred b 1865 in VA, Otis in 1866 in MO, Robert b Jan 1869, Walter (my great grandfather) in 1871, Mattie b Feb 1872, Cornelius b 1874, Jessie James b 1875, Annie b 1876, William b 1878, Lillie b 1879, Bert b Apr 27, 1884 and Milton D. b Nov 1886.

My Sister Debborah Louise was born in Burbank on June 2, 1953 and lives with her husband Nelson Ross Boylan and daugher Heather in Santa Clarita, CA. My uncle Frank, b 1910 in MO, died in Lompoc, CA in 1972.

Once when my father and I were having lunch at a restaurant in Glendale in the mid 1980's, when the table was ready and the name Milam was said, there were four Milam's who stood up: my father and I and to our surprise two other Milams, brothers who lived and worked in the Glendale area. I think they told us their relatives were from Indiana. It is not very often that we run into anyone else with the same last name.

I am happy to share this info with you and will be very attentive to finding out the link between Petis and the earlier Virginia Milams in your newsletters. Chuck Milam in Manhattan Beach, CA
